LaWanda Thomas, MA, LPC, NCC

LaWanda Thomas, MA, LPC, NCC, is a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor at Personal Balance Counseling in Orland Park. She works with children, adolescents, and adults, and also provides couples counseling. Her clinical focus is trauma, and she is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).

“That’s a good point” is something LaWanda often hears when helping clients challenge their thought patterns. She understands that starting therapy can feel awkward or scary—and that it can also be life-changing. Her goal is to meet clients where they are and grow from there, creating a space where they can feel heard, express their emotions, and learn tools for meaningful change.

LaWanda uses an integrative approach, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), trauma-informed therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). She personalizes treatment to each client’s needs and also offers EMDR for trauma treatment.

LaWanda supports clients navigating self-esteem concerns, trauma, life transitions, relationship conflict, and emotional challenges. She creates a welcoming space where clients can be themselves while building self-awareness, confidence, and healthier ways of navigating life’s challenges. Clients often describe her as insightful, humorous, enthusiastic, and caring. For clients who wish to incorporate their spiritual beliefs into therapy, LaWanda also offers faith-based counseling.
